In this event, Mr. Sanmao came to Fuzhou to tell you the stories behind China's modern navy.

Fuzhou Shipyard :

Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China, the dream of the Celestial Empire and the policy of closing the country to the outside world were shattered by the power of the sea in the mid- 19th century. Since then, the Qing Dynasty has been caught in a major change that has not happened in " three thousand years " . Faced with such severe challenges, the solution that the Qing Dynasty could come up with was the Westernization Movement, enriching the country and strengthening the army, among which the navy was naturally the top priority for development. In the fifth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty, that is, in 1866 AD, Zuo Zongtang established the Fuzhou Shipyard in Mawei, Fuzhou. When he was transferred to the Governor-General of Shaanxi and Gansu, he recommended Shen Baozhen as the Minister of the Shipyard to take charge of the affairs of the Shipyard. Since then, China's modern navy has begun to take shape.

The Shipbuilding Bureau had the Mawei Shipyard and the Naval Academy. The shipyard built several warships for the Qing Dynasty, but later declined due to poor management. The Naval Academy was another story. From here, China first systematically came into contact with Western knowledge, including geometry, calculus, physics, geography, etc. The officers trained here became the backbone of several naval forces of the Qing Dynasty. Not long after, the Fujian Navy was almost wiped out in the Battle of Mawei, and the newly emerging Beiyang Navy was in urgent need of talents, so the officers trained by the Naval Academy became the main force of the Beiyang Navy. In the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, many people who left a strong mark in the history of the Beiyang Navy, such as Deng Shichang, Lin Taizeng, Liu Buchan, Fang Boqian, etc., were all from the first post-school driving class of the Naval Academy. In the Battle of the Yellow Sea that determined the fate of the Qing Dynasty and Japan, the Qing Dynasty could be said to be the Fuzhou Naval Academy " one school, one level " against a whole country. Of course, this battle can also be seen as the ultimate showdown between the Naval Academy and the Etajima Naval Academy, and the bitter result of the battle continued to ferment for a long time afterwards, until today.

The Qing Dynasty opened a modern navy. The fact itself and the quality of the navy had a profound impact on the history of East Asia and the world. Among the relics of the modern navy, the Fuzhou Shipyard and the Naval Academy are undoubtedly worth experiencing in person. If the Qing Dynasty's model of training the navy is outdated, where is it outdated? In the Battle of Mawei, how did the Fujian Navy be beaten by a small French fleet without any chance to fight back? Before the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, how did the graduates of the Naval Academy perform in the Beiyang Navy? How much responsibility did the Naval Academy bear for the defeat of the Beiyang Navy? What was its subsequent development like? The origin of many problems is not in Dadonggou, Weihaiwei, or Lushunkou, but in Mawei outside the city of Fuzhou.
