Event Highlights

Governor-General's Office of the Three Eastern Provinces

The Governor's Office of the Three Eastern Provinces is located between the Forbidden City and the Marshal's Mansion. It is the most famous building in the Three Eastern Provinces after the Forbidden City. From the officials of the late Qing Dynasty to the governors of the Three Eastern Provinces, and then to the father and son of the Fengtian warlord Zhang, they all handled official business here. In 1907 , the Qing government made a decision to reform the official system, abolished the Shengjing General, replaced it with the Governor of the Three Eastern Provinces to manage the overall situation in the Northeast, formally established a province, and rebuilt the Shengjing General's Office into the Governor's Office of the Three Eastern Provinces. From the establishment of the Shengjing General in the first year of Shunzhi to the abdication of Xuantong in 1912 , a total of 87 Shengjing Generals and 3 Governors of the Three Eastern Provinces worked here for 268 years and governed the Northeast.

After the Revolution of 1911, the post of Governor-General of the Three Northeastern Provinces was abolished and the name of the mansion was changed many times, but the office building and its ancillary buildings remained the seat of the highest administrative body of the Republic of China in the Northeast region. After 1931 , other parts of the original building complex were gradually destroyed, but the main building was fortunately preserved to this day.

Zhang's Mansion

Not far from the Governor-General's Office of the Three Northeastern Provinces, there is a more famous modern building, the former residence of Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang, also known as the Marshal's Mansion. It was the official residence and private residence of Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang when they were in charge of the Northeast. The Governor-General's Office of the Three Northeastern Provinces was only where the governor worked, while the protagonist in the Marshal's Mansion was the " local emperor " of the Northeast.

From the demise of the Qing Dynasty in 1912 until Zhang Zuolin retreated to the Northeast in 1928 , the actual rulers of China were the famous " Beiyang warlords. "

The Beiyang warlords do not refer to just one or a few people, but to the Beiyang New Army system formed by Yuan Shikai's military training in Tianjin Xiaozhan. In this system, the Anhui clique and the Zhili clique are both the direct cliques of the Beiyang, while the Feng clique, who came from the countryside, also " mixed " into the top position under the leadership of Zhang Zuolin. Every time there was a conflict within the Beiyang, Zhang Zuolin was able to stand on the right side. Through such choices, the Northeast Army gradually developed and grew stronger. In addition, when facing the Japanese and Russian powers that were eyeing the Northeast, Zhang Zuolin was able to get along with both sides.

Zhang Zuolin

In 1924 , Zhang Zuolin entered the Central Plains, and the influence of the Fengtian clique in China reached an unprecedented peak. However, just as prosperity is followed by decline, the peak will also be followed by a trough. With Guo Songling's rebellion against Feng in 1925 , Zhang Zuolin's assassination and the change of flag in the Northeast in 1928 , the Sino-Soviet Union War in 1929, and the September 18th Incident in 1931 , the successive blows in just five or six years greatly reduced the strength of the Northeast Army and eventually disappeared from the stage of history.

How did these events happen, what impact did they have, and what did Zhang and his son do in these events?

Speaking of the September 18th Incident, the Japanese Kwantung Army occupied the entire three provinces of Northeast China without encountering any fierce resistance. In fact, before the September 18th Incident broke out in 1931 , the Northeast Army had its own arsenal, its own tank unit, its own aviation unit, and the most powerful naval fleet in the country at that time.

So, is the strength of the Northeast Army really as strong as imagined? What level is the military industry that they are proud of in the international community at that time? These questions will be answered in the offline activities of the Rowing Captain.

In short, it can be said that " a Marshal's Mansion is half of the Beiyang history. " I believe that after participating in this study tour, you will be able to sort out the chaotic history of the Beiyang government, and through this activity, you will also see a multifaceted Zhang Zuolin and a real Zhang Xueliang.
