Event Highlights

Biyun Temple

Biyun Temple was first built in the second year of Zhishun in the Yuan Dynasty ( 1331 ). It covers an area of 40,000 square meters. The buildings are arranged in a north-south symmetrical axis, and are divided into three major parts: the main buildings in the middle road, the buildings in the Shuiquan Courtyard, and the buildings in the Luohan Hall. The main buildings in the middle road include the mountain gate, the mountain gate hall, the Maitreya Hall, the Great Hall, the Bodhisattva Hall, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and the Vajra Throne Pagoda; the buildings in the Luohan Hall include the Zen Hall, the Luohan Hall, and the Sutra Pavilion; the buildings in the Shuiquan Courtyard were the temporary palaces of Emperor Qianlong, and include the Hanbi Zhai, the Hanqing Zhai, the Xixin Pavilion, the Qingjingxin, the Shiquan Yuexing Shanfang, and the Dragon King Temple.

In the third year of the Ming Dynasty ( 1623 ), Wei Zhongxian expanded the Biyun Temple and built a tomb. Later, he hanged himself and then mutilated his body during the reign of Emperor Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty, so he could not be buried here. In the first year of the Qing Dynasty ( 1644 ), Wei Zhongxian's accomplice Ge Jiusi followed the Qing army into Beijing and buried Wei Zhongxian's clothes and hat in the tomb, which became Wei Zhongxian's cenotaph.

In the 14th year of the Republic of China ( 1925 ), Dr. Sun Yat-sen passed away in Beijing and his body was kept in the rear hall of Biyun Temple. Therefore, the rear hall was renamed Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and the Vajra Throne Pagoda became the cenotaph of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

Tuancheng Martial Arts Hall

The Jianruiying Drill Hall, also known as the Tuancheng Drill Hall, was built in the 14th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty ( 1749 ). It is the only remaining group of unique city-style military buildings in Beijing and was the place where the Qing emperors trained and reviewed the Eight Banners soldiers.

In the 13th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign ( 1748 ), the chieftain of Jinchuan in Sichuan, Sha Luoben, attempted to annex the nearby tribes, and the Qing army was dispatched to quell the rebellion. In order to resist the Qing army, the rebels built many tall towers with stones at the passes and in strategic locations, causing heavy casualties to the Qing army and a great defeat. Emperor Qianlong was furious and personally selected 2,000 soldiers from the Eight Banners to form a special force - the " Jianrui Cloud Ladder Battalion " to practice attacking towers. He also built a training ground at the southern foot of Xiangshan Mountain and built 67 towers more than ten meters high, similar to those in Jinchuan, around the towers to conduct special training on attacking towers with cloud ladders (some towers still exist on the mountainside).

The Jianruiying Martial Arts Hall is a castle-like building surrounded by a moat. The building complex is complete and covers an area of 40,000 square meters. It is the only military building complex in Beijing that integrates city walls, palaces, pavilions, and training grounds. Its main buildings from north to south are Xiaoshiqiao, Jianruiying and the Martial Arts Hall, East and West Court Houses, Diaolou, Shisheng Temple Pavilion, and Fangma Huangcheng (destroyed). The jade door plaque on the top of the south gate reads " Wei Xuan Bilui " , and the jade door plaque on the top of the north gate reads " Zhi Yu Jin Tang " , both of which were written by Emperor Qianlong.
